Isnt this a philosophical question. Well it is a "complex" question though worded in a simple 3-world question. This is supposedly the goal of all human beings. This is the goal of a Man (as opposed to man, Man is a concept of a rational human being and thus denotes both the sexes).
a. "Athato Brahma Jijnasa" so starts upanishads. Let me explain a bit about Upanishads. The Vedas - I Do not want to branch to another tree, hence let us simplistically Vedas as a compendium of all knowledge- explain about all sort of knowledge, from daily tasks of a Man to astronomy, mathematics, geography, philosophy, theology and you name it. Vedas are supposed to be the words or rather the breath of God. Vedas which were mostly in oral form were compiled by Sage Vyasa (who is the son of Brahma, the Lord of Creation, Lord as opposed to 'God'). Vedas have 80% Karma Kanda. Action and its reaction. Wanna go to Moon? --> Do XYZ-Yaga.
Wanna get a beautiful wife? ---> Do penance or vrata towards Goddess Parvati or search in Orkut. Well, where did we start...Oh yes...Upanishads....Yes...The remaining 20% contains the vedanta (Simply meaning end of vedas"...Let me search for this in wikipedia....here it goes "The Sanskrit term upaniá¹£ad derives from upa- (near), ni- (down) and sad (to sit), i.e. referring to the "sitting down near" a spiritual teacher (guru) in order to receive instruction in the Guru-shishya tradition. The term thus emphasizes the esoteric nature of the texts, not intended for public teaching, but restricted to the confidentiality of personal instruction."
So Upanishad starts saying, "Athato Brahma jijnasa", which means the first thing to do is to know you or "I".
b. What does learned philosophers say?
Let us take Descartes. The only thing that cannot be questioned is the very fact that "we think" when we think. This can be said for sure, whatever anyone tries to confuse us with words such as "Illusion" etc. Hence this can be for sure. This is what Descartes could confirm too "I think, therefore I am"
C. Ayn Rand
Ayn Rand reverse engineers Descartes in saying that existentiality comes before concept formation. "Iam therefore I think" is what she says.
Bottomline: the only thing that "I" have seen being put to use practically and is working is square(i) = -1. This is an assumption that makes complex theory work.
Yes, those mathematicians seem to realize that this is indeed a "complex" question.
Let me refresh my knowledge of complex numbers and see if that gives me a better meaning of "I". If not anything, that will atleast leave me one less stone to turn. (-1).
I therefore contribute my -1 cent / paisa worth....
